Royler Gracie Seminar – Severna Park MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)

On Friday June 17th, several members of Garfield BJJ made a trip to Master Pedro Sauer’s Total Self Defense Academy to see a Jiu Jitsu and MMA legend.  Royler Gracie was in town to conduct a seminar.

And what a seminar it was.  Several aspects of self defense were covered with phenomenal details.

If you missed out, don’t worry.  The instructors here at Garfield BJJ will be covering the material in the coming weeks.

Of special interest was a guard pass series that Royler used to win four straight world championships.

Stay tuned to all of Garfield BJJ social and online communications especially this blog so that you can stay up to date with all the happenings at our academy!!!!

FREE Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Seminar 9 Oct 10

Yesterday, Garfield Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts owner, Jon Garfield, conducted a FREE Brazilian Jiu Jitsu seminar. The seminar was designed to give new students, or potential students that have never taken a BJJ class before, a jump-start at the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. For those that attended, the seminar gave them the tools needed to start in any Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program.

Here are a few pictures from the seminar:

Pan American Games – 2 Oct 10

Yesterday, Garfield BJJ student, Laurence “Lo Lo” Gensler, competed in New York at the No Gi Pan American Games placing 2nd in the Masters Super Heavy Weight Blue Belt division and 2nd in the Masters Blue Belt Absolute division.

In case you didn’t know, the Pan American Games is held annually in different parts of the United States. The Pan American Games is recognized as one of the biggest Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournaments in North America and is regarded as one of the most important grappling events in the world. Each year, competitors from all over the world attend this event.

Below “Lo Lo” describes a few of his matches:

The Masters Super Heavy Weight Division had some pretty big boys in it. The 1st match I ended up getting a take down for 2 points however I got a little over anxious trying to secure a choke while he was turtled up and I ended up getting swept. I scrambled into half guard so he only got 1 point for the sweep and I ended up beating him on points. The 2nd match I jumped half guard against this massive 287 pounder and started working for my under hook. I felt like I had to work and ended up giving up side control and lost the match on points 3 to 0.

The Masters Blue Belt Absolute had a mixed bag of competitors but in the end I took silver. The 1st and 2nd match I ended up securing a take down on both competitors and won both matches on points. For the 3 match after 3 minutes of defending take downs I got caught leaning forward too far and the guy ended up catching me in a double leg take down. I ended up securing half guard and then transitioned to full guard and hit a scissor sweep. However I could not get the mount position in time and he ended up in my half guard again. After the match I found out from his coach that he was a former D1 wrestler. So, I felt that I did a good job of holding off his take downs.

The tournament was loads of fun and it was amazing seeing so many international competitors. I can’t wait to do it again in 2011.

Thanks Jon for everything that you have done in getting me ready for this amazing experience.
